Play more Pompey
What is Play more Pompey?

We bet you’re dying to know more about us and how Play More Pompey came about? Well here goes...

In 2014 an incredibly passionate team of local businesses, organisations and individuals put forward a proposal to support Portsmouth as the Sport England City of Football. We were so impressed with the efforts of the city, you all did us proud on the work up and the actual day! Despite our best efforts, and backing from Portsmouth City Council, Portsmouth in the Community, Portsmouth Football Club and all of you guys, we reached the final stages but narrowly missed out on the title.

But don’t worry, this story has a very happy ending and is the very reason you’re here!

Sport England were so impressed with our proposal, and the passion showed by all involved, that they awarded us special funding to carry out some of the unique ideas we came up with as part of the bid.

This 2 year funded project will help us firmly put Portsmouth back in the spotlight and demonstrate that it truly is city of football. You know it, we know it, its now time for the country to find that out too! The funding is being used to help the set-up of football activities around Portsmouth including events, activities and this online hub for users to log their footballing activities. From a half hour kick about in the local park to taking part in an organised local event, we’re here to make it easier to get more involved with your friends and community.

The website will also be used to inform participants of local football events that they can get involved with in their local area. The aim of the Community of Football is to get as many people as possible, male or female, young or old, novices and old hands to get involved in playing football on a regular basis in some shape or form, to improve their general health and wellbeing.

Clare Martin, CEO of Pompey in the Community, who had an influential role to play in the initial bid, said: 'We are absolutely delighted to have been given this opportunity by Sport England to demonstrate what we can do. We may not have won the national prize but we hope that by the end of the two years we can proudly hold our heads up and say that we made a real difference to the city through the power of football.'
